Welcome to Ms. Feijo’s Class!
I am very excited about having your child in my classroom this year! It will be a joy to get to know your child and help him/her learn and grow throughout the school year. My goals are for your child to grow academically, physically, socially and emotionally. I will be working with your child to acquire the following characteristics of a successful student along with many academic and social skills.
- Be enthusiastic about learning and choose to learn
- Accept responsibility for behavior and schoolwork
- Demonstrate independent work skills and problem-solving strategies
- Be confident and develop a positive self-concept
- Respect classmates, other students, and school staff
- Work cooperatively and as a team
- Have an increased attention span
You can help by sending me a well-rested child with a full tummy and a hug and a kiss still fresh on his/her mind. This sets the stage for a lovely day!
What is Ms. Feijo’s Class All About?
Your child’s preschool experience has many new challenges and rewards for students and parents! This will be the first time for many children to be in a structured and routine driven classroom that requires them to pay attention, follow multi-step directions and be independent. Preschool will lay an extremely important foundation for your child’s education. This is what a typical day in our room looks like:
Morning Routine: Students enter the room and proceed to answer our Mystery Question of the day. Afterwards, the children will participate in Circle Time activities which consist of: calendar (days of week, months of the year, counting and graphing the weather). During this time, we will also focus on self-regulation techniques with “freeze dance” and “Songs We Know”. Opening Group also includes discussing topics that increase social emotional growth and focus on kindness, manners, wellness, and feelings.
Snack: We will be having a short snack time this year. Please send your child with a nutritious snack to school each day. We will have a fifteen-minute snack period for your child to eat.
Handwriting: Handwriting Without Tears is an Elementary handwriting curriculum that focuses on proper letter formation. We will begin with letters that have straight lines and advance to letters with curvy and slanted lines. The letters will NOT be done in alphabetical order. Also, when writing names, your child will start off writing their name in uppercase letters and advance to lowercase letters as they strengthen their fine motor skills.
Make-Believe Play: Make-believe play is an important aspect of cooperative learning skills and social growth. In our classroom, we will practice our socialization skills by playing in theme related centers. In these centers, the children will be given roles and taught how to play appropriately. They will have experience working on daily living skills, initiating conversations with peers, and use their imagination/ problem solving skills to create scenarios during their play. As part of our play, the children will be learning how to write a play plan to go along with the center they are playing. This allows the children to practice Literacy skills such as; writing their name, sounding out words, drawing a person, line spacing, and punctuation. All of our activities are differentiated to each child’s specific learning abilities and scaffolded to meet all our student’s needs.
Large Literacy Group-
Story Lab: During Story Lab, the children sit as a whole group and listen to a story that is read by the teacher. The same story is usually read throughout the entire week and focuses on different comprehension strategies. For instance: sequencing, vocabulary, and inferencing.
Small Group Literacy, Math, and Science: During this time, students will be split into small groups and work on hands-on Math, Literacy, and Science activities. Each group will be differentiated according to every child’s developmental level and they will be given projects that meet their individual learning needs.
Outdoor Play: The students will be given at least 15-20 minutes a day to play outdoors and utilize their gross motor skills. Please send them to school in sneakers daily or send a change of shoes to leave in the classroom.
Letters and Numbers: Each week, we will review a different letter, number and shape. I will inform everyone through email as to what they will be. Show and tell will be every Friday and will reflect the letter of the week. Therefore, if we are on letter “Ll”, you would bring in an item that begins with that letter (lollipop, lion, Lincoln logs). Please make sure it is small enough to fit in their cubby and is appropriate for school (no weapons or sharp objects).
How can I help my child be successful in Ms. Feijo’s class?
Please feel free to participate in our class as much as you are able. Helping hands are always appreciated. Whether it is volunteering in the classroom as a reader, contributing classroom supplies or sending in party items any participation will enrich our classroom experiences.
I realize that it is not possible for every parent to volunteer time in the classroom due to work schedules or younger siblings; however, there are a number of ways you can still be involved in your child’s education.
- Practice writing letters of the alphabet at home with your child. Encourage them to write their name and the letter of the week we are working on. (Graphics practice)
- Help your child pick out a show and tell item to bring to school for our letter each week.
- Check your child’s folder every evening. Discuss their schoolwork each day and give praise and encouragement. You can also ask questions about what he/she did during the day.
- Please keep open communication with me and our other teachers. If you have any questions or concerns, please see us.
- Please check our website for any updates or special events.
- Make sure your child gets a good night’s rest.
- Encourage him/her to use the restroom before school as part of the morning routine.
- Encourage your preschooler to be creative by drawing and cutting at home.
Research shows that a student’s success correlates with parental involvement at home!
Other Helpful Information
Birthdays: Your child will celebrate their birthday at school this year with a special crown, sticker, picture with our birthday lion, and a song. If you would like to bring a nutritious snack for our class, please feel free. Some examples include goldfish, fruit tray, pirate booty, mini muffins (peanut free), or popcorn. Please be sure all snacks are peanut free.
Clothing: Please help your child learn how to zip, snap, buckle, tie, button and fasten their clothing. We will work on this at school as well. Most students already know how, but some may still need practice. Also, it is helpful to practice opening snacks . In addition, please make sure your child is wearing comfortable clothing and shoes at all times. Sneakers and old clothes are your best option since we do paint and participate in messy activities. Finally, make sure your child has one or two extra sets of clothing in their cubbies. Children tend to spill things or may have occasional accidents, so please make sure their cubbies are up-to-date.
Contacting the Teacher: You are the most important person in your child’s life! I believe that parents are also extremely important to a child’s school environment. Communication between the parent, student, and teacher are the key to promoting an educational climate that is conducive to learning. I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns at any time. Thank you for taking the time to review the above information. I appreciate all your support in helping your child learn and grow and I look forward to sharing a wonderful year with you and your child!Amanda Feijo
