The First Grade Social Studies curriculum centers around three main units. It also includes lessons on the changing of seasons, map skills, goods and services, important people, holidays, and cultures. Below are the three main units taught in first grade:
My Place In The World:
The study of our community and state and its history enables learners to see the interrelationships between past and present. Also, to view current issues with a historical perspective that informs both thinking and action through a civic lens.Needs & Wants:
Our learners will understand the difference between what is a need and what is a want. A WANT is something that you can live without. It is nice to have and it makes you happy. A NEED is something that you cannot live without. You must have it to stay alive and well.Jobs, Work, and Volunteerism/ Service Learning:
Members of a community contribute to their community in a variety of ways. Good citizens look for ways to contribute in ways that add value. There are many different jobs that produce goods and services for communities. Students will investigate a wide variety of both jobs and volunteerism. An important understanding is that people work to meet their economic needs, to find personal fulfillment, and to serve others in need.
